Stu Ungar

The basic reason why Stu Ungar switched from gin rummy to poker was that he was a bit too skilled at it. So skilled was he, that no player was able stand up to him. Even the apparently professionals who were meant to be the best at gin were crushed when they competed with Stu Ungar. One of these gin masters was Harry Stein, called, "Yonkie". Harry suffered such a belittling beating at the hands of stu that he evidently quit participating in it professionally and never showed up at a gin rummy tournament.

Certainly, with a image like that it wasn't long before everyone became afraid of competing against mr. ungar. He couldn't find any matches and in his boredom he started doing something no one had attempted prior. Stu offered starting handicaps to potential opposing players in the wish that they may compete against him if they thought they had an advantage. He at will started from a bad position and one story has it that stu even played against a consistent cheater. Mid game, he get a few words of wisdom that the absconder was at it yet again but stu stated that he deduced of the chicanery and he would still acquire a win, which he did, of course.

The same problem followed Stu Ungar to sin city. He won so frequently that the poker rooms started requesting that he not to play in their poker rooms anymore. The explanation why was that other casino players refused to be seated at the poker table if Stu was seated.

Stu Ungar is recollected more for his accomplishments in texas hold'em poker but he always maintained that he was a whole lot more accomplished at gin rummy.

He beat Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in Nineteen Eighty and became the youngest world camp. Due to his looks that made him seem far younger than he really was, he got the nickname, "The Kid".
